Importing Products
What this article covers: How Importier uses AI to classify and order product images during import. Covers white-background vs lifestyle sorting, the six-image classification limit, alphabetical fallback, numbered alt text, CDN-protected URL handling, and how to override the order in Shopify admin.

How Importier Sorts Your Product Images

When your CSV or barcode lookup returns multiple images for a single product, Importier automatically sorts them so the most useful image appears first in your Shopify listing. The sorting is handled by AI image classification and does not require any manual input.

White-background images sort first

The AI analyses each image and classifies it into one of two categories:

  • White-background (catalogue) images - clean product shots on a plain white or near-white background, typical of manufacturer catalogue photography.
  • Lifestyle images - product shown in context, in use, or against a styled background.

White-background images are placed before lifestyle images in the final sort order. This matches Shopify best practice, where the primary product image should be a clean catalogue shot and supplementary images can show the product in use.

Six-image classification limit

To keep import times reasonable, the AI classification step processes a maximum of 6 images per product. If a product has more than six images, only the first six are classified. The remaining images are appended after the classified set in their original order.

Alphabetical fallback

When the AI cannot confidently classify an image (for example, a graphic or diagram that is neither a catalogue shot nor a lifestyle photo), those images fall back to alphabetical sorting by filename. This provides a predictable and repeatable order even when classification is inconclusive.

Numbered alt text

After sorting, Importier assigns numbered alt text to each image in sequence (e.g. Product Name 1, Product Name 2, Product Name 3). This gives every image a descriptive, SEO-friendly alt attribute without requiring you to write alt text manually.

CDN-protected URL handling

Some manufacturer image URLs are served through content delivery networks that restrict direct access via hotlink protection, token expiry, or referrer checks. Importier detects these protected URLs and routes them through its image proxy so that Shopify can download the image successfully during import. You do not need to re-host images manually.

Overriding the sort order

If the AI sort order does not match your preference, you can rearrange images after import by opening the product in your Shopify admin and dragging images into the order you want. The Shopify admin image reorder is saved immediately and overrides whatever order Importier applied.
