Shopify Google Merchant Centre Missing Brand Disapproval

A fashion accessories retailer imports 200 products from a new supplier CSV. The import completes without errors. Products go live on the storefront, descriptions look correct, prices are right. A week later, Google Merchant Centre shows 180 disapprovals with the reason: "Missing value: brand [brand]." The retailer checks the supplier file. There is no brand column, no manufacturer column, no vendor field. The import went through cleanly because Shopify does not require a vendor value for a product to be created. Google Merchant Centre does, and the shopify google merchant centre missing brand disapproval follows every import that leaves the Vendor field blank.

The brand attribute is one of the three primary product identifiers Google uses to validate Shopping listings. When it is absent, most products are disapproved.

How Google Merchant Centre Uses the Brand Attribute

Google's Shopping feed maps product attributes from the data Shopify submits. The [brand] attribute in the feed maps directly to the Vendor field in Shopify. When a Shopify product has a Vendor value, that value is submitted as [brand] in the Shopping feed.

According to Google's product data specification for brand, the [brand] attribute is required for every product except custom-made goods or products with no established brand. For the vast majority of retail products (imported wholesale goods, supplier products, and marketplace items), brand is required. Submitting a product with an empty or absent [brand] attribute results in the "Missing value: brand [brand]" disapproval.

Google uses brand, GTIN (barcode), and MPN together to match a submitted product to its known product catalogue. When brand is missing, Google cannot confirm the product's identity or establish trust for the listing. Disapproved products do not appear in Google Shopping results and do not serve Shopping ads.

The disapproval is silent from the Shopify side. A product with a blank Vendor field looks normal on the Shopify admin product page and renders correctly on the storefront. Shopify does not flag blank Vendor as a problem. Only Google Merchant Centre's Diagnostics tab reveals the disapproval, and only after the next feed sync.

Why the Brand Gap Happens After Supplier Imports

Supplier CSV files are built for supplier-side catalogue management. They contain whatever fields the supplier tracks internally: SKUs, product names, costs, dimensions, EAN codes. They rarely contain a "Brand" or "Vendor" field because, from the supplier's perspective, all products in their catalogue belong to one brand: their own.

When a retailer receives a supplier file from a jewellery brand, every product in the file IS that brand. The supplier does not need to write their brand name next to every row because the file itself represents their catalogue. But Shopify's Vendor field needs the brand name written explicitly against each product record. The supplier does not know or care about Shopify's field requirements.

The result: a supplier CSV with 200 products, no Vendor column, imported through Shopify's native import or any third-party tool that does not prompt for a vendor default, produces 200 Shopify products with blank Vendor fields. Google Merchant Centre then receives 200 products without a brand value and disapproves them.

The disapproval compounds when the same retailer works with multiple suppliers. Each supplier's file arrives without a vendor column. Each import batch adds more products with blank Vendor fields. Over time, the retailer's Google Merchant Centre account accumulates hundreds or thousands of brand disapprovals that pile up silently with each import run.

Three Ways to Fill the Brand Field at Import Time

The fix for brand disapprovals is almost always applied at import time, not after the fact. Setting the Vendor field during the import means every product in the batch carries the correct brand value from the moment it is created in Shopify, and the next Google feed sync clears the disapprovals.

Option 1: Map a supplier column to Shopify Vendor

Many supplier files include an equivalent column under a different name. Common column names that map to brand: "Manufacturer", "Brand Name", "Supplier", "Label", "Made By", "Distributed By". In Importier's field mapper, these columns appear in the source column list. Mapping any of them to the Shopify destination field "Vendor" transfers the value to every product during import.

For multi-brand supplier catalogues (a distributor selling products from 10 different manufacturers), the manufacturer column typically contains a different value per product. Mapping it to Vendor gives each product its correct brand name.

Option 2: Set a batch vendor default

When the supplier file represents a single brand's catalogue and has no vendor column at all, Importier's batch vendor field allows the merchant to enter the brand name once and apply it to every product in the import. For a 200-product import from a single jewellery brand, the merchant types the brand name in the batch vendor field. Every imported product receives that value as its Shopify Vendor, regardless of what the supplier file contains.

This is the most common resolution for single-brand supplier catalogues. It takes seconds and eliminates the brand disapproval for the entire batch in one step.

Option 3: AI enrichment from product title

For products where the brand name is embedded in the product title (e.g., "ACME Pro Wireless Headphones 40H Battery"), Importier's data enrichment can extract the brand from the title and populate the Vendor field. This works well for electronics, tools, and branded goods where the supplier file consistently includes the brand in the title.

For products with ambiguous or absent brand signals (unbranded goods, private label, or OEM products), the enrichment context field can accept a hint: "These are all ACME branded products" directs the enrichment to apply that brand name when it cannot be extracted from the product data alone.

  1. 01
Open the supplier file before importing. Check whether any column contains brand or manufacturer information, even under a different name. Common names
Manufacturer, Brand, Made By, Label, Supplier, Distributed By.
  2. 02
In Importier, start a new import and upload the supplier file. At the field mapper step, find the brand-equivalent column in the source column list and map it to 'Vendor' in the Shopify destination field.
  3. 03
If no brand column exists in the file, find the batch default Vendor field in the import wizard. Enter the brand name for this supplier. This applies to every product in the import.
  4. 04
If the brand name appears in product titles, enable AI enrichment to extract brand from title. Add an enrichment context note if the brand extraction needs guidance.
  5. 05
After the import, verify by opening three to five products in Shopify admin and confirming the Vendor field shows the correct brand. Then check Google Merchant Centre Diagnostics the following day to confirm the brand disapprovals are clearing.

Fixing Existing Brand Disapprovals With a Targeted Update Import

For products already in Shopify with blank Vendor fields, a product update import corrects the value without touching descriptions, prices, or images.

The update import requires two columns: the Shopify Handle (to identify each product) and the Vendor value (to set the brand). All other columns are left unmapped. Importier's field mapper allows mapping only the columns that need to change; unmapped columns are not written during the import, so existing product data is preserved.

For large catalogues with hundreds of products spread across multiple suppliers, a spreadsheet VLOOKUP can build the handle-to-vendor mapping: export the full product list from Shopify using Importier's Full Shopify CSV preset to get handles, then use VLOOKUP against a supplier-to-brand reference table to fill the Vendor column. The resulting two-column file imports quickly and sets the brand on every affected product.

After the update import, Shopify's next Google channel feed sync submits the updated brand values to Google Merchant Centre. Google typically processes the correction and clears the disapproval within 24 to 72 hours of receiving the updated feed data.

The article on products missing from the Google Shopping feed covers the broader range of disapproval types and pre-submission exclusions that affect Shopping eligibility. Brand disapproval is specifically a post-submission issue: the product was submitted, Google reviewed it, and rejected it for a missing required attribute.

Every product imported with a blank Vendor field is a brand disapproval waiting to happen in Google Merchant Centre, with no warning from Shopify at the point of import.

Products That Legitimately Have No Brand

Google's product data specification includes a provision for products that genuinely have no brand: the identifier_exists attribute can be set to false, which tells Google that the product has no GTIN, no MPN, and no brand. This exemption applies to truly unbranded goods (handmade items, vintage goods without a known maker, generic consumables with no manufacturer markings).

This exemption is narrow. According to Google's guidance on unique product identifiers, the identifier_exists: false flag should only be used when a product truly has none of the three identifiers. Setting it on branded products to avoid the brand requirement is a policy violation and can result in account-level penalties.

For private label products (goods manufactured to the retailer's specifications and sold under the retailer's own brand), the retailer's brand name IS the brand. These products should be imported with the retailer's trading name in the Vendor field. Google accepts merchant brands for private label goods without requiring a registered trademark.

For drop-shipping merchants who sell products from multiple third-party brands, each product's Vendor field should reflect the manufacturer's brand, not the retailer's name. This is the multi-brand case where the field mapper column mapping (Option 1) is most important: the supplier's manufacturer column gives each product its correct brand.

The SEO and Storefront Benefits of a Correct Vendor Field

Fixing the brand disapproval for Google Merchant Centre resolves the immediate Shopping revenue loss. The Vendor field also affects the storefront in ways that compound the benefit of getting it right at import time.

Shopify's Online Store 2.0 themes display the Vendor field as the brand name on product pages. A blank Vendor means no brand name appears on the product page, removing a visual trust signal that customers use to assess product quality. Themes that include a "by [Brand Name]" line under the product title display nothing when Vendor is blank.

The Vendor field is also searchable in Shopify's native search. A customer searching for a specific brand on the storefront finds products whose Vendor field matches their search term. Products with blank Vendor fields do not appear in brand-based searches even when the brand name appears in the title.

Shopify's automated collections support Vendor as a condition. A collection rule set to "Vendor is equal to ACME" automatically includes all ACME-branded products and excludes everything else. Correct Vendor values at import time mean vendor-based automated collections work immediately without a separate tagging or categorisation step.

For merchants managing a catalogue from multiple brands, the Vendor field is the clean separation between brand-based segments: search, collections, and Google Shopping feed, all read from the same field.

Key Takeaways

  • Shopify's Vendor field maps to Google's [brand] attribute. An empty Vendor field submits an empty brand to Google Merchant Centre, which results in "Missing value: brand [brand]" disapproval.

  • Supplier CSV files rarely include a Vendor or Brand column. Suppliers do not format files for Shopify's field requirements. The brand gap is systematic, not accidental.

  • Shopify does not warn you about blank Vendor during import. Products look correct on the storefront. The disapproval only appears in Google Merchant Centre's Diagnostics tab after the next feed sync.

  • Map the brand at import time in Importier's field mapper. Look for equivalent columns in the supplier file (Manufacturer, Brand Name, Label). For single-brand supplier catalogues with no brand column, use the batch vendor default to apply the brand name to the entire import.

  • Fix existing disapprovals with a targeted update import. Map only the Handle and Vendor columns. All other product data is preserved. Disapprovals clear within 24 to 72 hours of Google processing the updated feed.

  • Vendor correctness benefits more than the Shopping feed. The field also populates the brand name on product pages, enables brand-based storefront search, and powers vendor-based automated collections.
