A fashion retailer inherits a Shopify store with 600 products. Every description starts the same way: "This high-quality product features premium materials and is designed for maximum comfort." The copy came from the supplier's data feed. It is factually correct and completely interchangeable with every competitor who stocks the same line. The merchant wants to replace all 600 with descriptions that match their brand voice.

Shopify offers no native bulk description editor. The merchant's options are a CSV export, editing 600 rows in a spreadsheet, and a re-import, or editing each product individually in admin. Importier's Store Scanner solves this with Replace mode: a way to shopify bulk replace product descriptions by scanning the catalogue, configuring the AI, and overwriting every description in a single run.

## What Replace Mode Does

Store Scanner's Replace mode rewrites the description field of each product entirely. The existing content is removed. The AI generates a new description based on the product title, existing attributes, and whatever configuration the merchant sets: AI model, description style, persona, tone, and any custom brand voice settings.

Replace is one of two output modes in Store Scanner. The other is [Append mode](https://importier.app/blog/shopify-store-scanner-append-mode), which adds new content after the existing description rather than replacing it. The distinction matters: Replace is destructive by design. The original content is gone after the run.

<Callout>Replace mode removes the existing description entirely before writing the new one. This is intentional: it is how supplier boilerplate and blank descriptions get replaced. But it also means any hand-written content in that field is overwritten. Understanding this before running is what separates a successful catalogue overhaul from a recovery operation.</Callout>

## Three Scenarios Where Replace Is the Right Choice

Not every Store Scanner run should use Replace mode. Append mode is better when existing descriptions have value worth preserving: accurate product details, legal disclaimers, or partial content the merchant wants to supplement. Replace mode is correct in three specific scenarios.

**Supplier boilerplate:** The most common use case. The merchant's descriptions were populated from a supplier data feed. The copy is generic, identical across competitors, and not written in the brand's voice. There is no value in preserving it. Replace mode generates fresh descriptions using the merchant's AI configuration: their chosen model, description style, and persona. The new description reflects their brand.

**Blank or near-blank descriptions:** Products imported without a description field, or with a one-line placeholder such as "See specifications below." Replace mode generates a complete description from the product title and available attributes. Append mode would add content after the placeholder, which creates a worse result than a clean replacement.

**Catalogue-wide brand voice overhaul:** A merchant changes from a generic store to a specialised niche. Their existing descriptions were written for a general audience. The new positioning requires descriptions written with a specific persona and tone. Replace mode applies the new configuration to every product in one run rather than requiring a product-by-product rewrite.

## The Permanent Overwrite Risk

This is the non-obvious part of Replace mode, and it is worth understanding before running.

Store Scanner Replace mode is not reversible via Import Undo if the descriptions being overwritten predated Importier's installation.

Import Undo works by reverting products to the state captured in Importier's snapshot at the start of the run. But the snapshot records what Importier saw when it started the run, not the history of those products before Importier was installed. For a store where products were created and described before Importier was added to the app, Importier's snapshot starts from Importier's first view.

This means: if a merchant runs Store Scanner Replace mode on products with hand-written descriptions that were written before Importier was installed, and then uses Import Undo to revert, the descriptions Importier restores are whatever state those products were in when Importier first saw them, not the original hand-written descriptions.

According to [Shopify's documentation on product exports](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/import-export/export-products), merchants can export all product data including descriptions as a CSV at any time. Running an export via Importier's [SEO Audit export preset](https://importier.app/blog/importier-export-presets) before a Replace run captures every description in the catalogue as a recoverable backup. If the run produces unexpected results on any product, the export provides the source to restore from.

The rule is: always export before replacing content that has value.

## Running a Replace Mode Scan

The Store Scanner workflow for a Replace run has five steps.

<Steps items="Export first: use Importier's SEO Audit export preset to capture all current descriptions as a CSV. This is the pre-run backup. Keep it until you have reviewed the results and are satisfied. | Filter the products: in Store Scanner, choose which products the run applies to. Filter by collection (all products in a specific collection), by SKU pattern (products from a specific supplier), or by blank description (products with no existing content). Do not run Replace on the entire catalogue without filtering first unless you are certain every product gets the same treatment. | Configure the AI: choose model, description style, persona, and any brand voice settings (avoid words, example phrases, custom tone). Replace mode generates the entire description from this configuration, so the settings matter more here than in an Append run. | Review the preview: Store Scanner shows a sample of generated descriptions before committing. Read five to ten outputs. Check that the tone, length, and content are correct. If they are not, adjust the configuration and preview again. | Run Replace: confirm and run. Products update progressively. The run count, success count, and any skipped products are visible in the activity log." />

## Filtering Which Products Get Replaced

The filter step is the most important safety mechanism in a Replace run. Running Replace mode on an unfiltered catalogue overwrites every description regardless of quality. Most catalogues have a mix: supplier boilerplate, blank descriptions, and some products with genuinely good hand-written content. Filter to only the products that need the treatment.

**Collection filter:** If supplier products are organised into a specific collection (e.g., "Supplier A: Summer Range"), filter Store Scanner to that collection. Products in other collections are untouched.

**SKU pattern filter:** If products from a specific supplier share a SKU prefix (e.g., all start with "SUP-"), use the SKU pattern filter to include only those products. This works even when supplier products are mixed across multiple collections.

**Blank description filter:** For a targeted run at products that have no description at all, the blank description filter selects only those products. This is safe to run without reviewing outputs because there is no existing content to preserve.

Combining filters narrows the scope further. A merchant running Replace on a specific supplier's products within a specific collection can set both filters simultaneously. Store Scanner applies both conditions and shows the matching count before the run starts.

According to [Google's product data specification for Shopping](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/188494), unique and detailed product descriptions improve the performance of Shopping listings. Generic or duplicated descriptions are a factor in reduced placement. Store Scanner Replace mode addresses this at scale: a 600-product catalogue with supplier boilerplate across every listing becomes a catalogue with 600 unique, brand-voiced descriptions after a single run.

Errors in the CSV can overwrite other fields. 600 products at 8 minutes each = 80 hours of work minimum." withItems="Filter to the products that need replacement. Configure AI once for the entire run. Run. 600 products processes in minutes. The run touches only the description field; no other product data is affected." />

## AI Configuration for Replace Runs

Because Replace mode generates the entire description from scratch, the AI configuration has a larger effect on output quality than in an Append run. Three settings have the most impact.

**Description style:** Importier offers 7 styles. For a Replace run on supplier boilerplate, the Emotional Storytelling and Benefits-First styles produce descriptions most unlike the original supplier copy. For a technical catalogue (electronics, industrial equipment), the Technical style generates accurate specification-led descriptions. The Standard style is the balanced default when the catalogue is mixed.

**Persona:** With 156 expert personas across 43 industries, selecting the right persona produces descriptions written from an appropriate position of knowledge. A Replace run on a skincare catalogue with the Skincare Specialist persona generates different output than the same catalogue with the Generic Retail persona. The persona affects the terminology, the claims made, and the priorities in the description.

**Brand voice settings:** The avoid-words list and example-phrases fields in the brand voice configuration apply to every description generated in the run. A merchant who wants to avoid competitor brand names, internal jargon, or supplier terminology sets those words in the avoid list before running. They persist across runs.

## Key Takeaways

- **Replace mode overwrites the description field entirely.** The existing content is gone. Append mode is the alternative when existing content has value worth preserving.

- **Three scenarios where Replace is correct:** supplier boilerplate, blank or near-blank descriptions, and a catalogue-wide brand voice overhaul where no existing descriptions are worth keeping.

- **Always export before running Replace on valuable content.** Importier's SEO Audit export preset captures all current descriptions as a CSV backup before the run. Import Undo can revert the run, but only to Importier's snapshot, not to content that predated Importier's installation.

- **Filter before you run.** Collection filter, SKU pattern filter, and blank description filter narrow the scope of the run to only the products that need replacement. Unfiltered Replace mode overwrites every description in the catalogue.

- **AI configuration matters more in Replace runs.** Choose the description style, persona, and brand voice settings that match the catalogue's niche before running. Preview five to ten outputs before committing.

- **Scale is the main advantage.** 600 products with supplier boilerplate becomes 600 unique, brand-voiced descriptions in one run. The manual equivalent is approximately 80 hours of spreadsheet editing.
